Steel Ropes for Trawl Fishing Nets

When a fishing vessel drags a massive trawl net through the water, an unseen component bears the entire burden — the steel wire rope in the fishing industry, these ropes are known as trawl warps, and they serve as the critical link between the vessel and the net. Without reliable wire ropes, commercial fishing operations simply cannot function.

Trawl fishing ropes face some of the harshest working conditions of any wire rope application. They are continuously submerged in seawater, exposed to saltwater corrosion, dragged across rocky seabeds, and subjected to tremendous dynamic loads from both the vessel's propulsion and the water resistance of the net. On top of that, they must endure repeated spooling on winch drums and constant abrasion against the ship's stern and net drums.

So what does a fishing trawl rope look like? Common constructions include 6x19 and 6x36 classes, which offer good fatigue resistance and the ability to withstand abrasion and crushing on drums. These ropes typically feature an independent wire rope core (IWRC) for added strength and crush resistance. Diameters generally range from 18 mm to 32 mm, depending on the vessel size and fishing depth. Tensile strength grades of 1570 N/mm² to 1770 N/mm² are standard.

Corrosion protection is absolutely critical for fishing ropes. Hot-dip galvanized steel wire is the most common choice, but an increasingly popular option is plastic-coated or sheathed galvanized steel rope. The plastic jacket serves multiple purposes: it blocks seawater from reaching the steel core, reduces friction against deck equipment, and significantly extends service life. In fact, plastic-coated ropes can offer 3.5 to 5 times the corrosion resistance of standard galvanized ropes in seawater.

A current industry trend is the development of combination ropes — steel wire ropes wrapped with synthetic fiber (such as polypropylene tape yarn). These hybrid designs combine the high strength of steel with the abrasion resistance and handling ease of synthetic materials.

Another growing focus is biodegradable fishing gear to reduce ocean plastic pollution. While this primarily affects netting materials, the trend reflects the broader push toward more sustainable fishing practices.

The global fishing wire rope market was valued at approximately 464 million USD in 2024 and is expected to reach 510 million USD by 2031. As capture fisheries continue to supply protein to growing populations worldwide, the demand for durable, corrosion-resistant trawl ropes will remain strong.

Regular inspection of trawl ropes is essential — look for broken wires, corrosion pitting, and wear near end terminations. A well-maintained rope not only improves fishing efficiency but also ensures crew safety during hauling operations.

LAFIA WIRE ROPE supplies galvanized and plastic-coated steel ropes for trawl fishing, with custom diameters, constructions, and lengths to meet the needs of coastal and deep-sea fishing vessels alike.
