Steel Wire Rope: Hidden Backbone of LM-10B Sea Rocket Recovery

China’s Long March 10B recently completed booster recovery via an offshore net-capture vessel, drawing widespread public attention. Many viewers assume the rocket-catching central net is made of steel wire rope, yet aerospace engineering clearly separates fiber net and steel cable systems. As a domestic steel wire rope manufacturer, we share popular science knowledge about the independent, vital roles steel wire ropes play in this recovery system.

The core arresting grid hooked by the rocket’s latches is made of UHMWPE and aramid composite fiber ropes. Steel wire ropes feature high rigidity; direct contact with the rocket would create sharp impact and damage the fuselage. Hence fiber ropes take charge of the direct capture task. Even so, steel wire ropes are irreplaceable auxiliary structural and transmission parts of the whole recovery facility, applied in four key areas:

Truss frame tension steel cables

A 36-meter steel truss holds the full capture net array. Heavy steel wire ropes serve as diagonal tension stays around the frame. These cables withstand ocean waves and instantaneous pulling force during capture, stopping framework deformation and keeping the net stable as the ship rolls.

Dynamic positioning traction wire ropes

Sliding carriages mounting the fiber net run on deck rails. Winches pull steel wire ropes to adjust the net position in real time, counteracting vessel sway from wind and waves to align with the descending rocket. Steel wire ropes stand up to repeated friction and reciprocating traction, an advantage fiber ropes cannot match.

Hydraulic buffer transmission steel cables

Fiber arresting ropes do not link hydraulic dampers directly. Steel wire ropes work as transition connectors between fiber cables and multi-stage energy-absorbing cylinders. When tons of kinetic energy from the rocket transfers through the system, steel cables transmit force evenly across pulleys without rapid abrasion.

Post-capture stabilizing steel rigging

Once the booster is trapped, surrounding steel wire rope groups fasten to restrict swinging caused by surges. They prevent collisions between the rocket and steel truss before mechanical clamps lock the rocket firmly.

This rocket recovery project fully demonstrates the unique merits of steel wire rope: high tensile strength, strong wear resistance, stable fatigue resistance and dependable performance in saltwater marine environments. Unlike flexible fiber ropes engineered for shock absorption, steel wire ropes bear fixed loads, deliver precise power transmission and maintain safety stability under harsh working conditions.

Besides aerospace engineering facilities, our factory supplies standard and customized steel wire ropes and matching fittings for offshore projects, port lifting, construction and mining industries. High-quality steel wire rope acts as essential basic rigging for all kinds of heavy engineering equipment.

The successful net recovery of Long March 10B reflects the rigorous performance standards for steel cables used in marine heavy equipment. We focus on producing stable, durable steel wire ropes and accessories to meet diverse working condition requirements across general engineering fields.
